From listening to stories told by her grandmother in Haiti, to her debut novel, The Island Sisters, at the Miami Book Fair, Micki Berthelot Morency speaks with Eddy Edwards about her experience and journey which led to her writing her first novel about four women from Haiti, St. Thomas, and Guam who meet at a college counseling session for first-year students and learn they have a shared history of abuse. Dubbing themselves the "island sisters," their unyielding friendship is their touchstone across oceans, through labyrinths of forced marriages and violent men, motherhood, and their dreams of freedom.
Morency speaks about her years working with abused women, how it has influenced her life today, and the advice she shares with women experiencing domestic abuse.
